ED Medicine FAQs: Sildenafil, Tadalafil and Safety
These ED medicine FAQs explain questions about sildenafil, tadalafil and related treatments. They provide general education, not a recommendation for a particular product or a personal dosing plan.

What are sildenafil, tadalafil and vardenafil?
They are medicines in the PDE5 inhibitor group used for erectile dysfunction. They improve blood flow to help an erection, but sexual stimulation is still needed.
Do I need a doctor’s assessment before using an ED medicine?
Yes. In Australia, ED medicines require a prescription. A doctor checks your symptoms, general health and other medicines to decide whether treatment is suitable.
Why are nitrates an important safety warning?
Do not take a PDE5 inhibitor if you use nitrates, including some chest-pain sprays and tablets. Tell your doctor about every medicine you use before discussing ED treatment.
Can I choose or change an ED medicine based on an online comparison?
Your doctor should select the medicine and dose for your situation. Different ED medicines work somewhat differently. An online comparison cannot replace that assessment.
What side effects should I ask about?
Headache, flushing, nasal congestion and indigestion can occur. Serious problems can include vision changes, sudden hearing loss, fainting or a painful erection that does not settle. Seek urgent medical help for serious symptoms.
What if tablets are unsuitable or do not help?
Discuss other options with your doctor. Depending on the cause, these may include lifestyle changes, counselling, medical devices or other treatments.
