Rifaximin FAQs: Uses, Diarrhoea and Antibiotic Precautions
These rifaximin FAQs explain why the diagnosis and treatment purpose matter. They provide general education, not a recommendation to start an antibiotic or choose a personal course.
Updated: 29 October 2026. Source: MedlinePlus rifaximin information. This US reference does not establish the Australian indications or status of every brand.
What is rifaximin used for?
Rifaximin is an antibiotic used for specific conditions, including some bacterial travellers’ diarrhoea, irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhoea, and prevention of recurring hepatic encephalopathy. The intended use depends on the prescription and product.
Is rifaximin suitable for every case of diarrhoea?
No. It does not treat viral infections and is unsuitable for travellers’ diarrhoea with fever or blood. Contact a doctor if these symptoms occur or symptoms worsen.
Why can treatment instructions differ?
Different conditions require different treatment approaches. Follow your own prescription rather than another person’s course. Do not stop ongoing hepatic-encephalopathy prevention without discussing it with your doctor.
What should I discuss before taking it?
Mention allergies, liver disease, pregnancy, breastfeeding and all medicines or supplements. Your clinician may need to consider interactions or monitoring.
What side effects need attention?
Nausea, stomach pain, headache or dizziness can occur. Seek medical advice for watery or bloody diarrhoea during or after treatment. Get urgent help for breathing difficulty or facial or throat swelling.
What if symptoms return after treatment?
Contact your doctor if symptoms persist or return. Do not share leftover antibiotics or start another course without advice.
