Hydrocortisone Cream: Uses, Side Effects and Precautions

Hydrocortisone is a steroid cream, ointment or lotion that eases swelling, itching and irritation.

What should I know about Hydrocortisone Cream?

Follow the pack. Do not use a pharmacy-bought product for more than 1 week without seeing a doctor.

What are the side effects?

Side effects are less likely with short-term use. Possible effects include skin thinning, stretch marks and changes in skin colour, especially with prolonged use.

Who should check first?

Without a doctor’s advice, do not use it on the face, eyes, genitals, around the bottom, or on broken or infected skin. Check the product age limits; children should use it only on appropriate doctor or pharmacist advice.

When should I get help?

See a doctor if symptoms last more than a week. If you have used it long term, ask how to reduce it safely.

Doses vary, so follow your prescriber, pharmacist and the medicine label. In Australia, call 000 in an emergency. Outside Australia, use your local emergency number.
