Vitamin D: Uses, Side Effects and Precautions
Colecalciferol is a form of vitamin D. It helps the body absorb calcium and phosphorus from food. It is used to prevent and treat low vitamin D.
What should I know about Vitamin D?
A doctor can confirm low levels with a blood test. Follow the label, and do not take high-strength products unless they are prescribed.
What are the side effects?
Low daily doses do not normally cause side effects. Too much vitamin D can cause calcium to build up in the body.
Who should check first?
People who are rarely outdoors, have darker skin, or are pregnant or breastfeeding may need extra advice. Ask your doctor or pharmacist.
When should I get help?
See a doctor if you think you have low vitamin D, or have taken too much.
Doses vary, so follow your prescriber, pharmacist and the medicine label. In Australia, call 000 in an emergency. Outside Australia, use your local emergency number.
