Ashwagandha FAQs: Evidence, Side Effects and Precautions
Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera), sometimes searched as “ashvagandha”, is a herbal ingredient. These FAQs explain evidence limits and precautions, rather than promise a result for a particular supplement. Updated 29 October 2026.
Does ashwagandha help stress or sleep?
Some preparations may help stress or insomnia, but studies are often small and use different extracts. Evidence for anxiety is unclear. A finding about one preparation does not establish that every product works the same way.
Are root and leaf extracts interchangeable?
No. Plant part, extraction method and concentration affect composition. Check the exact label; a shared ingredient name alone does not establish equivalent products.
What side effects and long-term uncertainties matter?
Drowsiness and digestive upset can occur. Long-term safety is uncertain. The TGA also warns of very rare, potentially serious liver injury and sudden severe vomiting or diarrhoea.
Who should avoid ashwagandha or seek advice first?
Avoid it during pregnancy and breastfeeding. People with thyroid or autoimmune disorders, planned surgery or hormone-sensitive prostate cancer should seek professional advice; NCCIH advises against use in these groups. Avoid products containing it if you have current or past liver problems.
Can it interact with medicines?
Yes. Possible interactions include sedatives, anticonvulsants, thyroid hormone, immunosuppressants and medicines for blood pressure or diabetes. Have a pharmacist check your complete medicine and supplement list.
Which symptoms require stopping and medical advice?
Stop taking it and seek medical advice for yellow skin or eyes, dark urine, unusual tiredness, abdominal pain or loss of appetite. Sudden vomiting or diarrhoea also warrants stopping and assessment. See the TGA consumer safety alert for the full warning.
