Clarithromycin: Uses, Side Effects and Precautions

Clarithromycin is a prescription antibiotic used for chest, skin and ear infections, and for H. pylori. It is sometimes used for people with a penicillin allergy.

What should I know about Clarithromycin?

Symptoms often improve within a few days, but finish the course as prescribed.

What are the side effects?

Feeling or being sick, stomach cramps and diarrhoea are common.

Who should check first?

Tell your doctor about your medical conditions and all your medicines, as interactions are possible, and if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

When should I get help?

Speak to your doctor if side effects are severe or do not settle. Call your local emergency number (000 in Australia) for swelling of the throat or tongue, or trouble breathing.

Doses vary, so follow your prescriber, pharmacist and the medicine label. In Australia, call 000 in an emergency. Outside Australia, use your local emergency number.
