Docusate: Uses, Side Effects and Precautions
Docusate is a laxative that softens stools. It comes as capsules, liquid and an enema.
What should I know about Docusate?
Capsules and liquid usually take 1 to 2 days to work. An enema usually works within 20 minutes.
What are the side effects?
Feeling sick, stomach cramps and diarrhoea can occur.
Who should check first?
Do not use an enema if you have piles or an anal fissure. Children under 12 should only take it on medical or pharmacist advice.
When should I get help?
Talk to a doctor if constipation continues after 5 days.
Doses vary, so follow your prescriber, pharmacist and the medicine label. In Australia, call 000 in an emergency. Outside Australia, use your local emergency number.
