Escitalopram: Uses, Side Effects and Precautions
Escitalopram is a prescription medicine used mainly for depression, and sometimes for anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorder and panic attacks.
What should I know about Escitalopram?
It usually takes 4 to 6 weeks to work fully. Your doctor will probably reduce the dose gradually when you stop.
What are the side effects?
Nausea and headaches are common, usually mild, and often fade after a couple of weeks. Some people have trouble concentrating, so take care with driving at first.
Who should check first?
Tell your doctor about all your medical conditions and other medicines, and if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
When should I get help?
See your doctor if you are worried about side effects or your mood. If you have thoughts of harming yourself, seek urgent professional help. If you may act on them or have seriously harmed yourself, call your local emergency services immediately.
Doses vary, so follow your prescriber, pharmacist and the medicine label. In Australia, call 000 in an emergency. Outside Australia, use your local emergency number.
