Gaviscon: Uses, Side Effects and Precautions

Gaviscon products treat heartburn and indigestion. Alginate formulations form a protective layer over stomach contents; some also contain antacids. Ingredients vary, so check your exact pack.

What should I know about Gaviscon?

It is usually taken after meals and at bedtime. Check with a doctor if you need it for more than 7 days.

What are the side effects?

Side effects depend on the formulation. Check the exact pack leaflet and ask a pharmacist if symptoms bother you.

Who should check first?

Ask a pharmacist which type suits you, especially if you take regular medicines. Ibuprofen and aspirin can worsen symptoms.

When should I get help?

See a doctor if symptoms continue, or you have trouble swallowing, unexplained weight loss or vomiting.

Doses vary, so follow your prescriber, pharmacist and the medicine label. In Australia, call 000 in an emergency. Outside Australia, use your local emergency number.
