Empagliflozin: Uses, Side Effects and Precautions
Empagliflozin is a prescription medicine for type 2 diabetes, heart failure and chronic kidney disease. It helps the body remove extra sugar through urine.
What should I know about Empagliflozin?
It is used alongside diet and exercise for diabetes, and may be added to other diabetes medicines.
What are the side effects?
Low blood sugar is more likely when combined with medicines such as insulin. Follow your diabetes team’s treatment plan. Ask about dehydration and infection symptoms, and what to do when you are ill.
Who should check first?
Tell your doctor about your medical conditions and all your medicines, and if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
When should I get help?
Seek emergency care for possible ketoacidosis, such as unusual thirst, confusion, extreme tiredness or sweet-smelling breath, or severe genital pain and swelling. Get urgent advice for fever, shivering or painful urination. Call your local emergency number (000 in Australia) for swelling of the throat or tongue, or trouble breathing.
Doses vary, so follow your prescriber, pharmacist and the medicine label. In Australia, call 000 in an emergency. Outside Australia, use your local emergency number.
