Paracetamol: Uses, Side Effects and Precautions

Paracetamol relieves pain and reduces high temperature.

What should I know about Paracetamol?

Follow the label, and never take more than it states. Many cold and flu products also contain paracetamol, so check labels to avoid an unsafe total dose.

What are the side effects?

Side effects are rare when taken correctly. Taking too much can damage the liver, even if you feel well at first.

Who should check first?

Check first if you have kidney or liver problems, or drink heavily. Warfarin, metoclopramide and domperidone may interact.

When should I get help?

If you have taken more than the label states, get medical advice straight away, even if you feel fine. In Australia, in Australia, call the Poisons Information Centre on 13 11 26. Seek help for yellow skin or eyes, or unusual bruising. Call your local emergency number (000 in Australia) for swelling of the throat or tongue, or trouble breathing.

Doses vary, so follow your prescriber, pharmacist and the medicine label. In Australia, call 000 in an emergency. Outside Australia, use your local emergency number.
