Tamsulosin: Uses, Side Effects and Precautions
Tamsulosin relaxes the muscles around the prostate. It is used for urinary symptoms of an enlarged prostate, such as difficulty starting to urinate or waking at night to urinate. Do not assume these symptoms are prostate related. See your doctor for an assessment.
What are the common side effects?
Dizziness and abnormal ejaculation can occur. If you feel faint, weak or dizzy, sit or lie down straight away. Alcohol can add to dizziness.
Why should I mention it before eye surgery?
Tamsulosin can affect cataract and glaucoma surgery. Tell your eye specialist if you take it or have taken it. Also tell your doctor before any operation or dental procedure.
Who may not be able to take it?
People with a severe liver condition, or who have fainted or felt dizzy when suddenly sitting or standing, may not be able to take it. Tell your doctor if you have kidney problems. Use for other conditions or in children requires specific medical advice; do not infer suitability from a general guide.
Can it interact with other medicines?
Yes, including other alpha blockers, verapamil, diltiazem, ketoconazole, itraconazole, erythromycin and some HIV medicines.
When should I get urgent help?
Stop and seek medical help immediately for swelling of the face, throat or tongue with trouble breathing, a persistent painful erection, a blistering or severe rash, or an irregular heartbeat.
Doses and formulations vary. Follow your prescriber, pharmacist and the leaflet supplied with your exact medicine. In Australia, call 000 for a medical emergency or the Poisons Information Centre on 13 11 26 for suspected poisoning or overdose. Outside Australia, use your local emergency and poison-information services.
